Talk To Me 18: The New Guy

Talk To Me 18: The New Guy

Imagine the following scenario: You’re sitting in class, probably bored because of the routine of it all. The teacher’s voice barely registers in your head and you doodle some things in your notebook to at least appear to be taking notes. There’s a knock on the door, and he steps in. The new student. The girls take notice immediately. He looks different, maybe exotic, maybe mysterious. Whatever thing is new about this guy, the main requirement is that he’s cute. Oh, and that he takes a seat near you, of course. You feel it. A tingling sensation brought on by […]

Talk To Me 17: Same Name Game

Aside from hearing the characters’ voices in my head when I read books, another odd thing I do when reading has to do with names. If a character has the same name as someone I know, I end up picturing my friend in place of the character. Even if the character looks NOTHING like my friend, even if they act nothing like my friend. That usually happens at the beginning of the book though, and once the book goes on, I stop picturing my friend as them. But like how I am with voices and accents, my friend’s voice reads […]

Review 72: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (Lisa See)

The writing of this book was really beautiful to me, as See was able to convey the tranquil countryside, the careful power balance in the household, the beauty of their clothing, the pain of foot-binding, and the richness of their festivals and celebrations. Most of all, it really let me connect with the emotions of Lily, because she does go through a lot of changes. The outside world and her circumstances change, making her have to adapt as well. I think this book was lacking for me in the pacing, because it did move slow at certain parts. Like I said, […]

Review 71: Fractured (Dani Atkins)

After finishing the rather heavy fantasy series of The Lumatere Chronicles, I knew I needed something light to let me have a break. This book wasn’t as light as I thought it would be, but it was still a good read. It had a family dynamic that I really liked, a protagonist that was smart and driven but not completely perfect, and an intriguing storyline. Some of the things I didn’t like about it were that the secondary characters felt rather flat, and the ending had me conflicted. So about the main character, Rachel. I like her because her reactions were […]

Talk To Me 16: Scared by the Next Book

A while back, I posted that I was hesitant of starting series. Today is another series-related topic and it’s about being scared to pick up the next book in a series. (Seriously, Ana, grow a backbone about these things!) Let’s take a look at what happens to me… The scene is set with Ana finishing off a wonderful book, she is elated and happy and raves about the book. It is the first book in a series and she MUST get her hands on the next book now! Spurred on by the success of the first book, she gets her […]

Review 70: Quintana of Charyn (Melina Marchetta)

SPOILER WARNING: The synopsis and review will contain spoilers for the first two books in The Lumatere Chronicles, Finnkin of the Rock (review here) and Froi of the Exiles (review here). However, my review will not contain spoilers for this last book.. There’s one thing that I really don’t like when it comes to these stories with many characters and parallel storylines: when one chapter ends on a cliffhanger of sorts and the next chapter switches over to another group for something completely different. Unfortunately, this thing kept happening in this book which made me kind of frustrated. Parts of this […]

Review 69: Froi of the Exiles (Melina Marchetta)

SPOILER WARNING: The synopsis and review will contain spoilers for the first book in The Lumatere Chronicles, Finnkin of the Rock. My review for the first book can be found here, but my review will not contain spoilers for Froi of the Exiles. Let me say this up-front to get it out of the way: Froi is one of my favourite characters in this series, and I have a serious love-hate relationship with him. Hate mainly because he does seriously horrible things in the first book. I don’t think it’s right to declare him a perfect innocent baby because he’s not. […]

Talk To Me 15: Books That Hurt So Good

I have a love/hate relationship with sad books. I can get so into a sad book that I put it down feeling so sad or angry. I’m not sad or angry because I disliked the book, but because it was so well-written that it made me feel TOO MANY THINGS. For me, a sad book doesn’t necessarily have to end in tragedy. For me, a sad book is one that makes me want to put the characters in comfy blankets and give them hot chocolate. They go through so much pain and hardship, and I end up being so attached […]

Review 68: Fear Week (Andrew McBurnie)

When it comes to historical fiction, I really like books that are set in periods that other books don’t really cover. This is the first time I’ve read about a book set during this time, and it was really interesting because I honestly don’t know a lot about the Cuban missile crisis, or about the United Kingdom in the 60s. Or about the 60s in general, aside from the cartoon-induced visions of hippies, disco, and Hairspray. But anyway, this book shows that real people can be affected by events happening far away, that (as one character said) history happens and […]

Announcement: Taking April (an..

Posted April 6, 2014 by Ana in Announcements | 6 Comments

Expecting a weekly digest, weren’t you? :P Well, I won’t be able to post a weekly digest today or for the rest of April (and the first week of May). Why? I mentioned that I would be taking April off in my Monthly Digest because I had to attend to some things offline. So what does this mean for the blog? This blog will be running on a schedule in April. I have my regular menagerie of two reviews and one discussion post per week, so this blog will not be dead this month. :) In fact, I have discussion posts scheduled […]
