Review 148: Bittersweet (Sarah Ockler)

One of the main things I didn’t like about this book was the protagonist. Hudson can’t seem to make up her mind about certain things, or she hesitates a lot. I think she tends to flip-flop quite a lot, wanting one thing then going for another instead. There were also moments where I just couldn’t handle her hiding. The blurb mentions that she “stays under the radar” and there were some times that I wish she would stop thinking like that, and be assertive with some people. There was some great character development in this book where she does show that […]

Talk To Me 60: Reviewing Series

For me, I have two ways of reviewing series: one book at a time or an overall review for the entire series. On the blog, I usually end up reviewing one book at a time, especially if I don’t have access to all the books at once. Overall reviews usually happen when I binge-read a series, but I hardly do that nowadays. :( Let’s have a look at these two methods, shall we? One Book at a Time Pros: I can focus on each book and nail down what I really liked about each one. Helps me build up a […]

Review 147: Shadow and Bone (Leigh Bardugo)

I have heard a lot about the Grisha trilogy and while I did enjoy the first book, I don’t feel like I totally fell in love with the series. Yet. I guess I’ll have to read the next book and find out, right? ;) Anyway, I really liked the setting that Bardugo chose and applaud her world-building. The culture feels rich and diverse. Although it obviously has Russian influence, it still feels like its own world. The usage of terms in different languages is well-done and doesn’t seem gimmicky or forced. The magic system in this one was really cool! […]

The Taylor Swift Book Tag

The Taylor Swift Book Tag

I got tagged by the lovely Angie for this tag! I didn’t use to like Taylor Swift’s music, but I do like some of her newer stuff. Also her Tumblr is pretty funny. :P I’m also so in love with the Kurt Hugo Schneider + Alex Goot + Alex G cover of Blank Space. :D So let’s get this started! We Are Never Getting Back Together: A book/series that I thought I loved, but then wanted to break up with. Oh, this book. Look at that cover. Look at how gorgeous it is! I started this book with the highest of […]

Review 146: The Lost Hero (Rick Riordan)

I loved Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and reading this book made it feel like coming back to summer camp and meeting all the new people. I really liked the new characters that Riordan introduces, seeing some of the old characters again, and hearing the references to old characters. What I like about this book is that it doesn’t feel like it just continues the PJO series, but it feels like a new chapter in an epic story. Diverse and interesting characters, fast-paced action, and many many mythology references. What’s not to love? First, the characters. LEO IS MY […]

Talk To Me 59: Changes in Ratings

When you finish a book, do you have an idea of what your final rating will be right away? If you’re like me, you probably have some idea of what you want to rate the book. Usually, I head over to Goodreads and rate the book. Soon after, I want to sit down and write my review so my thoughts about the book are still fresh. After rating the book on Goodreads, I don’t really touch the rating after that. However, there are times when I’ll be writing the review and realise “Hey, this book is actually a  kind of […]

Review 145: Pawn (Aimee Carter)

I found this book’s spin on dystopian society to be an interesting one. There is definitely some real-world relevant commentary in there about privilege, equal opportunities, and discrimination, which I really like seeing in books. There characters were, for the most part, multi-dimensional and complicated. They do a lot of confusing and conflicting things, so it was hard for me to really find consistency in them. I was pretty confused at the end of the book. I wasn’t sure who was lying about what any more. Maybe it was that tangle and jumble, especially near the end, that made me not […]

Review 144: Face Time (S.J. Pajonas)

I’m always looking for a book that is able to realistically portray a long-distance relationship, especially in our age of Skype, smartphones, and Face Time. My reason being that I am in an LDR, and I am constantly looking for books that satisfy my need to read about couples in my situation. This book was able to nail down some of the main characteristics of an LDR (at least for me): time zones, texting at odd hours, insecurity, sharing photos, and desperately wishing the other person was there beside you. Minus all the family drama, I could see my relationship […]
