Talk To Me 68: Catching up with books

Whenever I log into Goodreads, I don’t even want to look at my reading challenge. At the beginning of the year, I was so ambitious and set a goal of 150 books. I underestimated how busy my new direction in life would take, but that’s another story for another day. Today, I’m going to talk about playing catch up with books! When there’s a long weekend, I know that I really want to read some books. Both because I want to actually read, and to build up a review buffer. :P So I borrow a whole lot of ebooks, park […]

Review 163: Illusions of Fate (Kiersten White)

I was hesitant to pick up this book because I didn’t really enjoy the last book I read from the author, Chaos of the Stars. I heard a lot of good things about Illusions of Fate, so I decided to take a chance. Thankfully, this book made for a much better reading experience. The main character is a lot more fierce and intelligent, the love interest is charming but flawed, and the supporting characters are pretty hilarious. The concept of magic in this book is also quite well-done, because it isn’t big nor flashy, but can be done in subtle […]

Review 162: Splintered (A.G. Howard)

I have a super soft spot for retellings, and I really enjoyed Howard’s take on Alice in Wonderland. This book is delicious dark and filled to the brim with rich fantasy, like eating dark chocolate cake with sweet cherry icing. I think I just didn’t really enjoy the romance, because I just didn’t really fall in love with neither Jeb nor Morpheus. Super protective and aggressive dudes, or slippery smooth-talkers with many faces, are not dudes that make me swoon. Also, love triangle. Not too pronounced, but it was still there. Okay, so moving on to what I did like. […]

Talk To Me 67: The Romance Takeover

Now, don’t get me wrong: I like romance books, I think a well-written love story is a wonderful thing. For this post, I’m going to talk about books that I thought would focus on something else (e.g. action/mystery/adventure) but the romance ends up taking over the plot. So one of my pet peeves with books is when I pick up a book that boasts of awesome fantasy adventure or thrilling crime mystery, but… I end up with a book where the romance drama is so thick that the plot is just kind of… There. :| I do not like that. […]

Review 161: More for the Heart (Ekta Garg)

Confession time? I get all fluttery when I read about Pooja and Akshay. They’re just so… SO GOOD TOGETHER. Their interactions, their banter, the way they play off each other. It just makes me so happy because their love story isn’t overly dramatic or mushy, or filled with flowery words. They just seem to connect about many things, especially when it comes to their culture’s expectations of them and married life. They understand each other, and even though it takes them a while to realise their love, I saw the connection right away. ;) As for the other story, it […]

April: Do you own any gaming merchandise? Show them off, or tell us what merch you would most love to have! Hey there, dear reader! So, gaming merchandise. Oh, merchandise. Don’t tempt me and suck out most of my money! :( I don’t actually buy a lot of gaming merchandise with my own money. When I […]

Review 160: Frenched (Melanie Harlow)

Frenched had all the hallmarks of a short and sexy erotica book: super quick attraction, seemingly perfect (but obviously has his own issues) hero, and a heroine who just had something really bad happen to her (usually involving another man). All the tropes are in full force here, but it didn’t feel like a purely shallow book where the plot is just there to fill in time between sex scenes. What did I really like about this book? I liked the character development, especially Mia. She is so used to order, lists, schedules, and calendars. She tends to spend more […]

Talk To Me 66: Imperfect Five Star Books

The title sounds like some kind of weird contradiction, am I right? So, let me explain. If you look over at my rating system, you’ll notice that my “five star” rating means that I found the book “perfect.” I feel like I need to revise that. I think that a book can still earn five stars from me, but not be a perfect book. Sure, I may have little doubts about the pacing or some of the characters, but I still really enjoyed the book. It may come down to my emotional response to the book: if I couldn’t put […]

Review 159: The Bravest Princess (E.D. Baker)

While not the best book of the set, I still enjoyed The Bravest Princess. I always gush over Princess Annie and her “good friend” (oh blurb, you know better than that) Liam, because their interactions are just really funny and sweet. Annie is brave, resourceful, and quick-thinking. Something I really appreciated in this book was another aspect of Annie’s “curse” about how magic affects her. Things manage to get more dangerous for her somehow, and she has to use all her wits to dodge crazy stuff. Another thing I liked was the inclusion and thus development of other characters. Though […]
