Talk to Me 92: Series Disinterest

Last week, I talked about my different levels of series interest. Today, I want to talk about losing interest in a series. Specifically, I want to talk about how I decide that the series is just not for me, and what I do about it. So let’s say I pick up the first book in a new series, read it, finish it and my reaction is… A resounding “meh” or a “Well, I didn’t like that.” To decide whether or not I want to continue the series, I end up asking myself the following questions: Why didn’t I like that? […]

Talk to Me 91: Series Interest

How many series are you currently in the middle of? According to my series taxonomy (Thanks, UBBV3!), I have reviews for this blog for 81 series. Eighty-one doesn’t seem too bad, and the actual number may be lower since I didn’t exclude series that I had already finished. But it’s a good ballpark number for me to visualise and try to understand. Do I actually keep up with all of these series? No way! I have varying degrees of what we will call… Series Interest. Today, I want to talk about my different levels of Series Interest, and what questions do […]

Talk to Me 90: One book, many formats

Audiobooks, e-books, and print books. Those are the formats I usually read books in, though I’m leaning more towards the first two nowadays because they are more easily accessible. I also tend to listen to audiobooks when I’m on the go and generally can’t just sit still while listening to them. If I start reading a book in e-book format, or listening to it in audiobook format, I hardly ever switch. I know other bloggers enjoy switching between the different formats, but either I forget or I just can’t be bothered, haha! So today, I want to talk about my […]

Talk to Me 89: Proofreading your posts

I tend to write almost all my posts in Microsoft Word, so the neat little spell-checker and auto-correct thing helps make sure that my posts do not contain any spelling or grammar terrors. :P But proof-reading doesn’t only help with spelling/grammar, it can help with the flow of a post or a review. But do I proof-read my posts? Not really. I generally have a structure in my head for my reviews and discussions, but I don’t stick to it all the time. Sometimes I just post whatever my fingers decide to type up that day. Sometimes that post ends […]

Talk to Me 88: Rating Distribution

For me, three stars is what I would define an “average” book. I liked it, but it just didn’t grab me or make me want to keep reading it the way or a four-star or five-star book would. So you would think that my usual rating is three stars, right? That’s what I thought too, until I had a quick gander at my rating statistics. … Well, it looks like there’s a bit of a skew happening there. It seems that I more commonly rate books towards the higher end of the rating scale, with most of them landing at […]

Talk to Me 87: Worn books

I used to buy a lot of secondhand or used books, mostly because I love a good bargain but also because books are expensive where I live (*shakes fist at import costs*). Sure, The Book Depository is great and all but I think there’s really nothing quite like roaming the shelves and trying to find a title that will pique your interest. :) But that’s not the main point of this discussion post. My main point is that: For me, a worn book means that it is/was a well-loved book. Why? The yellowed pages, the cracked spines, the folded corners […]

Talk to Me 86: Time to play WATHFOP!

This month, I’m joining in Sci-Fi Month 2015 and all my science fiction-related posts will be for that! Join me, join us, and let’s have a blast together! Today, let’s play… What Are They Hiding From Our Protagonist? In science fiction books, it’s common for the main character to discover the big secret behind their government, futuristic corporation, utopian society, commune, etc. Today, I want to talk about some of the common ones. I won’t be giving any specific examples because that would give away the big twist in the story, but I bet you’ll be able to think of […]

Talk to Me 85: Opposing groups in science fiction

This month, I’m joining in Sci-Fi Month 2015 and all my science fiction-related posts will be for that! Join me, join us, and let’s have a blast together! You know what I love reading about in science fiction books? When the aliens or rebels or non/augmented humans or vaguely humanoid insect people have depth and complexity that contrasts against the protagonist’s group. Basically, I like a book where the interactions between the groups are very interesting from a sociological point of view. Dystopian: government vs ordinary people Probably the most common type that I see in sci-fi/dystopian (see last week’s discussion […]

Talk to Me 84: Dystopian titles and science fiction

This month, I’m joining in Sci-Fi Month 2015 and all my science fiction-related posts will be for that! Join me, join us, and let’s have a blast together! Today, I’m going to talk about dystopian titles and science fiction. I have separate genres for dystopian and science fiction, although some people like to have dystopian as a subgenre of sci-fi, and today I wanted to hear YOUR thoughts about it. But first, a definition of “dystopia”: (noun) a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding. Here are some of my thoughts: A lot of dystopian titles have […]

Talk to Me 83: Personal Details

Tell me something, dear readers. What personal details do you know about me? Probably not a lot. A couple of people probably know where I’m blogging from. I talk about my boyfriend a few times. Maybe some of you have guessed some details about me? :) I don’t like sharing a lot about myself on this blog because I feel like it’s a rather public platform. Or at least a platform that is less private than what I’m used to. For example, I do have personal accounts on various social media sites but those are all mostly locked up to various […]
